Handcrafted in the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico (Santiago Matatlan, Cuilapam and Tlacolula Valley), this mezcal is a blend of Tobala and Espadín agaves. Grown for at least 12-15 years, the agaves are baked in 40-ton batches for a full 7 days.
Notably smaller than Espadín, Tobala requires eight times more hearts to produce the same amount of mezcal, contributing to its rarity. Utilizing organic wild yeast for fermentation and a double copper still distillation process, this mezcal is a testament to traditional Oaxacan craftsmanship.
Notes of sweetness, smokiness, citrus, floral hints, nuts, and roasted coffee. A unique experience in a single bottle.
Matra derives from “Mother tradition” in Zapotec — authenticity and respect for the land are the core values of the founding Ortega family. Mezcal Matra arose from the need to preserve the tradition of mezcal production. The palenque (distillery) made its first mezcal in 1845, but it was not until 2011 that the first steps were taken to start a family project.
Located in the valley of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, the distillery collaborates with various local mezcal masters and their families, making Matra a sustainable project that provides benefits to the less favored populations of Oaxaca.
