Diego Conterno, Barbera d'Alba "Ferrione" Piedmont, Italy 2020
Diego Conterno's Barbera d'Alba has fresh notes of lively red fruit, warm spice, and plum. It is medium bodied and fresh, well balanced with fine-grained tannins. The grapes are grown in the Ferrione vineyard adjacent to the winery in Monforte d’Alba, just outside the Barolo zone.
All of Diego's wines are certified organic. The grapes are fully destemmed, followed by fermentation using indigenous yeasts in a temperature-controlled steel tank. The Barbera ages for 4 months in 500 liter oak barrels followed by 6 months in cement tank so that the acidity and flavor of the classic Barbera can combine to create a fantastic, well-balanced wine.
A rising star in the southern reaches of the Barolo zone, Diego Conterno and his son, Stefano, craft elegant Nebbiolo wines in Monforte d’Alba. Diego started his own project in 2000, after two decades at Conterno Fantino where he worked alongside his cousins, bringing with him a five-acre plot in ‘Ginestra,’ Monforte’s top cru. To Diego, wine is passion, interpretation, and art. Wine reflects the identity of a terroir: in this case, the Langhe of Monforte d’Alba. Conterno has been considering the vineyards, the grapes, and the wine from this point of view for over thirty years.
