Montevertine, Sangiovese, Rosso di Toscana IGT, Italy 2018
Montevertine has been one of Tuscany's vanguard producers since the early '80s and for decades they have been redefining Sangiovese and all that it can be. "Le Pergole Torte" usually receives all of the accolades, but the "Rosso" is not to be missed.
The Montevertine Rosso di Toscana is the standard bearer of the estate. It is composed of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, and 5% Colorino, and is aged 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels.
Following its exit from the Chianti Classico Consortium in 1982, Montevertine was forced to re-label its flagship wine as Toscana Rosso. While not labeled a Chianti, Montevertine's Toscana honors the historical greatness that vines planted on these Tuscan hills can achieve. It is a balanced and elegant wine, perfectly encapsulating the best traditions that Tuscany has to offer.
The fruit for this bottling comes primarily from a 2.5 hectare parcel of vines planted in 1982 on a south-southeast facing slope. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
