The Eitelsbach vineyards, which we still cultivate today, were first mentioned in a document in 1223. At their feet, the Carthusian order founded a winery in 1335, which was managed by the monks for almost 500 years. As a result of secularization, the Karthäuserhof fell into the hands of the French state in 1803, which eight years later sold it to the French general manager Valentin Leonardy.
Since then, the Karthäuserhof has been in the hands of our family without interruption. Today's owner Albert Behler, who runs the winery in the seventh generation, is a descendant of the Leonardys / Rautenstrauchs / Tyrells, who have helped the Karthäuserhof to gain an international reputation over the last 200 years.
A look at the list of the oldest companies in the world shows how extraordinary such a long company history is. There are only about 80 across the globe that are older than the Karthäuserhof, and only seven of them are wineries!
